History of the W149

The W149 220SE emerged as Mercedes-Benz refined its post-war sedan strategy with modern engineering and restrained styling.

Development began in 1956 as engineers expanded the successful 220 platform with improved suspension geometry and a more powerful fuel-injected engine option.

Production commenced in 1958 with the introduction of the refined 220SE variant alongside the base 220 model at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Manufacturing concluded in 1960 when Mercedes-Benz transitioned production to the entirely new W111 platform with its distinctive pontonless bodywork.
